[PHS 250] Updates in Human Physiology & Microbiology

Introduction

This course is designed to allow students to complete the material at their own preferred time of day while still following a timetable to complete assignments and take exams. Be aware that each of these subjects is rather rigorous in its own right and keeping up with the material may prove challenging. However, the instructor will help in whatever way he can. By the time students are through with this course, they should be fascinated with the wonders of how living cells work and influence the world!

At the conclusion of this course, you will have learned many different aspects about two major topics broken down as follows:

  • Physiology: In this section, we will cover the cell and how it works as well as problems that are encountered such as aging and cancer. We will also review and update some of the different systems including the endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, and urinary systems and specific defects that occur in those systems.

  • Microbiology: This section discusses antimicrobial chemotherapy, drug side effects, and drug resistance mechanisms and some ways of overcoming these problems. Additionally, we will learn more about bacterial structure and growth characteristics, infection and disease processes and how our immune system fights off infections.

This course was designed for the nursing consortium, primarily for RNs who plan to enter a BSN program. PHS 250 is a review and recent update of concepts in human physiology and microbiology. This course utilizes an extensive review packet of basic concepts of physiology and microbiology which must be completed during the course. Lecture only, online class. This course fulfills the UWC requirement for an Elective (EL).

Prerequisite: Clinical certification with previous physiology and microbiology courses or consent of instructor.

The course material will contain chapters from texts covering basic concepts in microbiology and human physiology in addition to information gathered from websites to enhance your learning. Additionally, periodic discussions are required in order to further explore the topics covered in this course.
