Before you apply for admission, it’s best to determine which type of student you are. Figuring that out will help you know exactly what you need to submit (additional documentation, fees) to ensure a speedy admission process. 

What type of student are you?

Transfer Students

Transfer students are students who have attended another university or technical college and are in good academic standing (see Academic Standing).

Admission is simple. Submit the following to the UW Colleges Admissions Office: 

  • The University of Wisconsin System online application for admission
  • $50 application fee (waived for students who have attended another UW Colleges campus)
  • Official transcript from college attended
  • Official high school transcripts

Academic Standing: Students who wish to transfer to UW Colleges Online must be in good academic standing at their previous institution (at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA in the most recent term). Students denied admission based on their previous academic record, who apply in a timely manner, may appeal their admission status to the campus Academic Actions Committee. Please contact the Student Affairs Office for information on the academic appeals process.

How To Apply:

  1. Be sure to select UW Colleges Online as your campus.
    • Applications and all required materials must be submitted in a timely manner prior to the end of the registration period to allow sufficient time for processing.
  2. Submit the following required documentation to the UW Colleges Admissions Office, 780 Regent Street, Madison, WI 53715 to complete your application.
    • A nonrefundable $50 application fee must accompany the application of new freshmen and transfer students from schools outside the UW College System. This fee can be paid by credit card after completing the online application or by mailing a check or money order to the UW Colleges Business Office, 780 Regent Street, Madison, WI 53715. For students requesting an application fee waiver, contact the UW Colleges Solution Center at 877-449-1877.
    • Official high school transcripts or a record of GED and official transcripts for all other institutions attended must be submitted. Official transcripts must bear a school seal and must be sent directly from the institution or within a sealed envelope from the school.
  3. An official evaluation of course credits will be completed upon receipt of all application materials.
    • Transfer Wisconsin allows students to see how credits may transfer from UW System campuses and Wisconsin Technical Colleges.

Returning Students

Returning students are students entering at 22 years of age or older.

Admission is simple. Submit the following to the UW Colleges Admissions Office:

  • The University of Wisconsin System online application for admission
  • $50 application fee
  • Official high school transcripts OR official copy of your HSED/GED scores
  • Contact Student Affairs and request an appointment with a returning adult advisor.

Veterans and Active Duty Military

Applying is easy! Please complete the following

2.       $50 application fee

3.       Official transcript from previous institutions (if applicable)

4.       ACT Scores (Note:  ACT scores are not required if you are 22 or older)

5.       If applicable, request military transcripts:

Please note: During the admissions process, students are classified as resident or non-resident for tuition purposes.  If you are classified as a non-resident student, you may be eligible for resident tuition under the Choice Act.  For more information about the Choice Act, click here

Re-entry Students

Re-entry students are students previously enrolled at UW Colleges Online but not enrolled at a UW Colleges campus during the prior semester. Applicants who have a 2.0 or higher semester and cumulative GPA will be admitted in good standing.

Readmission is simple. Submit the following to the UW Colleges Admissions Office at 780 Regent Street, Madison, WI 53715:

If you previously attended a UW Colleges (freshman/sophomore) campus, do NOT submit the $50 nonrefundable application fee. This fee is not required.

Your application will be considered complete once official transcripts outlining all prior college work have been received. Contact Student Affairs to meet with an advisor to select and register for your classes.

New Freshmen

To be admitted as a new freshman, a student must:

  • Have graduated from a recognized high school, have a certificate of GED or present other evidence of ability to begin university work
  • Have a minimum of 17 college preparatory credits; 13 of the 17 credits must be distributed as follows:
    • English: 4 credits
    • Social Science: 3 credits
    • Math: 3 credits (must include at least 1 credit of algebra and the equivalent of 1 credit of geometry)
    • Natural Science: 3 credits
    • The remaining 4 credits will be from the above areas, foreign languages, fine arts, computer science or other academic areas
  • Take the ACT or SAT. The ACT or SAT scores must be received by your campus before you will be permitted to register for classes

Students who fail to meet these requirements may appeal to the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs for an exemption. Applicants who do not meet these requirements may appeal to the Assistant Campus Dean for Student Affairs at a UW Colleges campus for an exemption. Particular consideration in admission will be given to: (1) applicants who have been out of school for two or more years, (2) service veterans, as defined by state and federal policies, and (3) students who have been disadvantaged as a result of substandard education, family income level or ethnic background.

Special Students

Special students are defined as non-degree-seeking students or those enrolled as "guest" students for 8 credits or less.

Admission is simple. Submit the following to the Student Affairs Office:

No fee is required. No transcripts are required. However, please note that some campuses may require additional documentation for special students. Please contact Student Affairs to learn more.

Special students are limited to earning 8 credits. Exceptions must be approved by an advisor. Students who plan to earn more than 8 credits at UW Colleges Online must apply as degree-seeking students (see New Freshman or Transfer Students). Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Assistant Campus Dean for Student Affairs.

Special students are not eligible for financial aid. Special students will not be assigned an academic advisor. Be aware that you are responsible for knowing any prerequisites for the course. If you attend another institution and intend to transfer class(es), please verify that the course(s) will be accepted by your program.


High School Students

Admission is simple. Submit the following to the Student Affairs Office:

No application fee is required.

High-Risk Students

High-risk students will be required to participate in special programming if they have any of the following characteristics:

  • High school class rank in lowest quartile
  • GED or HSED certificate
  • High school academic course deficiencies
  • Transfer student entering on probation

Special Programming

  • You will receive mandatory advising prior to registration.
  • At the discretion of your advisor and UW Colleges Online, you may be required to:
    • restrict your course load and course selection;
    • attend regular meetings with an advisor throughout the semester or session; and/or
    • enroll in appropriate basic skills courses and/or tutoring.
  • You will be required to meet with an advisor prior to each registration until you achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 with 12 or more UW Colleges credits.
  • If your scores on the English or mathematics placement tests indicate that you must enroll in remedial coursework, UW policy requires that you successfully complete the remedial course(s) before you earn a total of 30 credits. In addition, you may be required to limit the number of credits carried while you are enrolled in remedial courses.
  • If you do not wish to register under these conditions, you may appeal for an exception to the appropriate committee at your UW Colleges campus.

International Students

The admission requirements for students who are not residents of the United States vary from those outlined in the UW Colleges catalog for U.S. residents. International applicants are admitted on the basis of their academic preparation, their ability to effectively understand and use the English language, and the determination by the international admissions office that their educational and career goals may be furthered by attendance at a UW Colleges campus.

ITT Students

University of Wisconsin Colleges Online is working with students affected by the recent closure of ITT Technical Institute. UW Colleges Online, the online campus of the University of Wisconsin Colleges, is dedicating staff to help former ITT Tech students complete or begin their degree. 

Impacted students should contact an adviser Cassandra Chulick or call 608-270-7100 to discuss credit transfer, career guidance, available classes and financial aid options. Classes start monthly and fall semester enrollment is still available.
 
UW Colleges Online offers individual classes or degree programs that can be completed anywhere in the United States. A number of UW Colleges campuses are also located within an hour of former ITT Tech locations and include several near Milwaukee and Madison. View a complete list of campuses
